There are many maritime schools in Africa which have proven to be equal to other maritime collages in other continents. This is our main focus in this article.
Maritime Academy is a high institute of learning which main aim is handling human relationship with the sea and its waterways. Maritime studies covers many areas like maritime history, sea literature, poetry, film, oceanography, and contemporary marine policy.
A maritime academy is a technical school, focused on teaching practical skills which can be put to use on the ocean or in industries related to the ocean
Furthermore, Maritime Academy mainly prepare maritime cadets for a carrier in Merchant Marine and seamanship.
The maritime study curriculum prepares the cadets on different carriers in Merchant Marine and other civilians marine industries. These carrier may be in Deck, Engine room or stewardship.
Looking at the African continent, there are many maritime schools which have the capacity to prepare cadets on seamanship and they are accredited too.
Also, As the industry (Merchant Marine) is increasing continousely due to it position in economy of every country both developed and underdeveloped, there is need for capable hands to man the industry.
So now we are going to be looking at the Maritime Academy or schools in Africa which has been taking the mantle of this important part of our economy.

1. The Maritime Academy of Nigeria
Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron, Akwa Ibom state Nigeria formerly known as the Nautical collage of Nigeria is a federal owned institution. Established in 1979 to educate and train shipboard officers, ratings and shore-based management personnel in the industry.
The scope of this maritime collage was increased in 1988 to train other categories and levels of Mariners in the Nigerian Merchant Nevy and other workers in the sector.
The Academy has Three Schools Namely
- School of Marine Engineering,
- The School of Maritime Studies and
- School of Nautical Studies

2. Southern Maritime Academy
Southern maritime academy located in Uwheru, Ughelli Delta state Nigeria is a regional institution and also one of the leading maritime institution in Nigeria. Aspiring sailors/seafarers at southern maritime academy are trained and kitted for the maritime industry.
Furthermore, the maritime Academy is accredited by the relevant agencies and bodies and they have the need manpower and capacity to train mariners in the need areas and in discipline.

The Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria (College of Maritime Transport and Management and Technology) located in Badagry Expressway, Badagry, Lagos Nigeria is a maritime institution established in 1999 to provide academic and professional skills in Shipping, Transport, Maritime Engineering, Nautical Science, Business Management and logistics are being undertaken in Nigeria.

4. Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre
Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre located at KM 4, East West Road (After Jephtah College) Ozuoba, Port Harcourt, Nigeria and was established in 1991, and engaged in the inspection of navigational and marine communication equipment.
Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre started safety training for the maritime and offshore oil & gas industries in 1998. Since then, it has become the leading provider of maritime and offshore oil & gas industries in Nigeria.
