Calvin Coolidge Scholarship Program

The Coolidge Scholarship Program is a program of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, which is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit based in Plymouth Notch, Vt., and the President’s birthplace.

However, students are required to apply for the scholarship during their junior year of high school if they fulfill the Coolidge Scholarship Requirements. Finalists are flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they get interviewed by the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury.

Moreso, recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application. Finalists who are not listed as Coolidge Scholars are eligible to receive a smaller, one-time, college scholarship.

The main criterion that distinguishes Coolidge Scholars, therefore, is academic excellence and demonstrated interest in public policy, humility and service.

The scholars get to know Coolidge and help the Coolidge Foundation oversee its formidable debate programs. The scholars are to return to Plymouth Notch for a week in each of the next three summers.

Meanwhile, The top Coolidge applicants are named “Coolidge Senators.” In the summer, the Coolidge Foundation invites Coolidge Senators to the Senators Summit in Washington, D.C.  At the Summit, the Senators explore the nation’s capital, learn about President Coolidge, and meet other high achieving students from across the country.

The Coolidge Scholars Program is operated by the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation.

What is Calvin Coolidge Foundation about?

The Coolidge Foundation is the official foundation dedicated to preserving the legacy and promoting the values of America’s 30th president. The Foundation was formed in 1960 by John Coolidge, the president’s son, along with a group of fellow Coolidge enthusiasts.

The Foundation is based at the president’s birthplace in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. It seeks to greatly increase Americans’ understanding of President Coolidge and the values he promoted.

In the absence of an official presidential library, the Coolidge Foundation maintains a collection of Coolidge-related papers and effects, operates a website with Coolidge materials, and conducts research on President Coolidge.

The Foundation partners with the State of Vermont — which manages the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth Notch — to encourage more Americans to acquaint themselves with Coolidge by visiting the historic site.

Advantages Coolidge Scholarship Program

The Coolidge Scholarship is the most generous college scholarship in the world. As a program of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, it is America’s “unconditional” merit scholarship [granted regardless of geographic location, race, family background, and income, area of study or university to be attended] is open for only high school juniors who enroll full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university for the first time in fall 2018.

What is Calvin Coolidge Scholarship Amount?

Applicants who make it to the finalist level, but do not ultimately win the full scholarship, receive a one- time finalist scholarship of $5,000.

The 2019 application cycle will mark the fourth year of the Coolidge Scholarship. A Coolidge Scholarship covers a student’s full tuition, room and board, and an annual stipend for books and supplies.

The competition for the Coolidge Scholarship is indeed significant, as the Coolidge Foundation invites the top 100 applicants to participate in its Coolidge Senators Program which includes an all-expenses-paid Summit Weekend in Washington, D.C and a one-time $1,000 scholarship.

To be eligible, an applicant must fulfill the following Coolidge Foundation Scholarship Requirements:

  •  Applicants must intend to enroll full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university as an undergraduate for the first time in fall 2020. Only students in their junior year of high school, or the equivalent if homeschooled, are eligible to apply.
  •  Applicants must be citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States of America by the 2019 scholarship deadline.
  •  They cannot be the immediate family member of any current employee or trustee of the Coolidge Scholars Program or the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation.

Level / Field of Study

The Calvin Coolidge scholarship is open to students who intend to enrolL full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university as an undergraduate for the first time in fall 2020.

Below is the Recommendation Guideline for this scholarship

  •  Guarantors should ensure to include the first and last name of the applicant in the first paragraph of your letter. Include your full name and affiliation at the end of the letter.
  •  State how they know the applicant, for how long and in what capacity. The letter should be as specific as possible, providing relevant examples and other information that will be helpful to demonstrate to the Coolidge Scholars Program why the applicant is a worthy candidate.
  •  Guarantors can refer to coolidgescholars.org for more information about the Coolidge Scholarship and the selection criteria that will be considered when evaluating applicants.
  •  The letter should be no longer than 1,200 words in length and may be submitted as either a PDF file or a Microsoft Word file.
  •  To submit your letter of recommendation, guarantors should follow these steps:
  •  Click on the link given in the automated email from the Coolidge Scholarship, indicating that a student has been listed as a reference.
  •  Complete the subsequent form and upload the recommendation letter into the form. To upload your letter, first, save it as a Microsoft Word or PDF file, and click the “+Select a file” button towards the bottom of the form.
  •  A window will pop-up to allows you to select the file to upload the letter, complete the rest of the form, and click the “Submit” button.

Coolidge Scholarship Deadline

Applications and letters of recommendation for the 2020 Coolidge Scholarship must be received by January annually at 5:00 PM Eastern Time in order to be considered.

Spring 2021: All applicants who are named finalists will be contacted directly by phone before May 1, 2021, and invited to Finalist Interview Weekend, which takes place in Woodstock, Vermont and historic Plymouth Notch, Vermont.

The Coolidge Foundation will cover the travel and lodging costs for finalists and one parent to attend Finalist Weekend.

Summer 2021: Newly selected Coolidge Scholars will spend an orientation week at the Coolidge Foundation in Plymouth Notch, Vermont.
